A WordPress Blog: Is It the
Right Option for You?
By Eileen Hebert
For
those new to blogging, one of the first questions they ask is which blog platform they should use. And most hear that their best option is to
have a WordPress blog.
But
this can be cause for confusion, because there are two versions of WordPress.
WordPress.com
This is
a hosted blog platform. When they host your weblog, you don't have to worry about things like installing the software to your own host, or
updating the software when a new version is released.
The
downside is that they seem to frown on users putting affiliate links in their posts.
WordPress.org
This is
what people are referring to when they say a WordPress blog is best.
With
this option, you install the software (which you can get for free at the website) on your own server, and host your blog
yourself.
Sound
intimidating? Well, it isn't as intimidating as it sounds. Many affordable web hosts have something called cPanel. With cPanel, you can
install WordPress quickly and easily, and with just a few button clicks. And, if necessary, you can uninstall it just as
easily.
The
Benefits of Hosting Your Own Blog with WordPress
Using a
stand along blog platform has many benefits.
You don't have to worry
about blog deletion
One of the biggest pluses is
that you don't have any TOS to worry about violating.
Many
third party weblog hosts have terms of service, a long and involved list of rules, that you must abide by. Violate one of these terms of
service accidentally, and your blog could end up getting suspended, or even deleted.
When
you host your own blog, you don't have to worry about violating the host's terms of service because, well, you're the
host.
Wide variety of styles
and designs.
Third party hosts also don't usually give you a lot of choices when it comes to the look and style of your weblog. You are given a limited number
of templates to choose from, and that's pretty much it.
With a
self-hosted blog, you will usually have a plethora of designs to choose from. In fact, choosing just one might be the hardest
part.
You can use
plug-ins.
With third party hosts, there is often a limit on what your weblog can and can't do. But, with a standalone host like WordPress, there are all
sorts of plug-ins available. And you can use these plug-ins to customize your blog in just about any way you want.
When
you are first starting out, using a third party host like Blogger can help you to get started fast. But, as your blogging business grows,
hosting your WordPress blog on your own host can offer you more features, more benefits, and more room to grow.
