Before Starting A Home Based Business
By Eileen Hebert

Planning will help to assure success for your business.  Before you jump in with both feet consider taking time to make some well-thought out decisions.  This article will provide several steps that you can take to assist with those decisions.

Perhaps the first thing to decide is what products or services you are going to sell/provide.  To make this initial decision you should consider what exactly it is that you have to offer.  Are you an expert at anything?  Before you say no, consider this fact.  Although some people may know more about a given topic chances are that you know more than most.  It is this second group of people that will perceive you as the expert.

You will also need to consider if you have the education and skills required to compete successfully in the marketplace.  You may find that you need to research various topics before you have the knowledge required.  Many entrepreneurs find that classes at local colleges are helpful in assisting them to enhance needed computer skills.

Several things should be considered related to your product or service.  First, what specific need does it meet?  When marketing your product/service you will want to market to a target audience.  Therefore it becomes necessary to examine who will benefit from your particular product/service.  Consider whether this is a seasonal item or if it is needed year ‘round, which means you can market it year ’round.

Perhaps the most important thing to consider in relation to your product or service is how you will feel about working with it.  Will it energize and inspire you?   Don’t settle for something just because there is a possibility of making money with it.  One of the principle reasons above money that people go into business for themselves is to gain an income based on doing something they love – don’t settle for less!

When you have a business based on doing something you love you will never feel as though you are working.  After all, work is a four letter word that most of us don’t like.  Working for yourself, setting your own hours, and taking responsibility for the good as well as the bad times are a part of having a home-based business.  Having more time to do the things that are important to you is also a part of having a home-based business.

Taking the time to plan before you start a home business will not only ensure the success of your business but planning will also go a long way toward guaranteeing your happiness in the future.

Eileen,
I really enjoyed our session. All the ideas you had for me will defiantly help my business grow and establish me as an expert in my field. You have really encouraged me and inspired me to be creative and to think of so many ways I can generate more business. I have already used one of the ideas you gave me and am working on so many more. This past holiday weekend we had the best week at the store since it has opened and I know it is a direct cause of applying what we discussed.  I would definitely encourage anyone who needs some great advice and direction to work with you.  Please use my testimonial to encourage others. Thank you for your help.

Dear Eileen,
More was gained from my 90 minute consultation than from years of wading and wandering through the available information attempting to find a plan.  I felt understood as a unique individual.  The information and ideas learned were both inspiring and practical regarding opportunities I'd already wondered about plus many more I'd never considered.  There is clarity in the immediate steps I'm now taking doing things that I enjoy plus I learned of many resources I hadn't known existed to look into during the coming weeks and months.  Now, I have the beginnings of a flexible, workable plan and the awareness that I really can create the life I want to live and have the means to support that life.

Hi Eileen,
What a great idea! It's fresh and new and definitely has a lot of potential. I've never heard of anyone doing anything like that. And my husband could help me with the business cards as we have a computer program for that. Yes, I would definitely have to get a portfolio put together. Hmmm......there are a lot of possibilities with this idea. Thanks so much for the suggestion. I will definitely think about it. :-)
