How to Start a Blog
By Eileen Hebert

Unsure about how to start a blog? Well, it is actually much easier than you might think.

If you have never started a blog before, you might feel a little intimidated. But you can actually get a new blog up and running in a few simple steps.

Choose Your Niche

When choosing a niche, try to pick something you are interested in and care about. You are going to be maintaining this blog for a while, and you don't want to start with a topic you will eventually get bored with.

If you want to make money with your blog, you should also choose a topic with money-making potential. Think about the things people spend money on, like acne products, ebooks on losing weight, and guides on planning weddings on a budget. You can make money in any of those niches.

Name Your Blog

Choosing the right name for your blog can make a major difference. So spend some time on it. And make sure you work the name of your niche into the title.

Choose a Platform

Where will you host your blog?

For someone new to blogging, having their blog hosted by Blogger might be a good choice. The service is completely free, and takes little technical know-how to use. You can also monetize Blogger blogs with Google Adsense ads and affiliate products.

WordPress is the best choice if you want to use your own domain name, instead of a subdomain name. It also gives you more options.

With WordPress, you have to use your own web host, like HostGator, to host your blog yourself. You will also have to buy a domain name, which you can get for less than $10.

Many find the idea of installing WordPress themselves intimidating. But most web hosts make the process extremely easy.

Monetize Your Blog

Sign up for a Google Adsense account, and place Adsense ads on your blog. Find some affiliate products in your niche, and post your affiliate link and a picture (if possible) in your sidebar.

There are many more ways to monetize your blog, but these are a good and simple place to start.

Post Daily

Make a post in your blog every day for the first two weeks. Later, you can reduce that to posting every other day, or a few times a week. But, starting out, you want to fill your blog with good, fresh content.

Learning how to start a blog is a lot easier than many people think. The important thing is to start right now. The sooner you start, the sooner you will start making money blogging.

Eileen,
I really enjoyed our session. All the ideas you had for me will defiantly help my business grow and establish me as an expert in my field. You have really encouraged me and inspired me to be creative and to think of so many ways I can generate more business. I have already used one of the ideas you gave me and am working on so many more. This past holiday weekend we had the best week at the store since it has opened and I know it is a direct cause of applying what we discussed.  I would definitely encourage anyone who needs some great advice and direction to work with you.  Please use my testimonial to encourage others. Thank you for your help.

Dear Eileen,
More was gained from my 90 minute consultation than from years of wading and wandering through the available information attempting to find a plan.  I felt understood as a unique individual.  The information and ideas learned were both inspiring and practical regarding opportunities I'd already wondered about plus many more I'd never considered.  There is clarity in the immediate steps I'm now taking doing things that I enjoy plus I learned of many resources I hadn't known existed to look into during the coming weeks and months.  Now, I have the beginnings of a flexible, workable plan and the awareness that I really can create the life I want to live and have the means to support that life.

Hi Eileen,
What a great idea! It's fresh and new and definitely has a lot of potential. I've never heard of anyone doing anything like that. And my husband could help me with the business cards as we have a computer program for that. Yes, I would definitely have to get a portfolio put together. Hmmm......there are a lot of possibilities with this idea. Thanks so much for the suggestion. I will definitely think about it. :-)
