Ideal Careers
By Eileen Hebert
When considering a new career or a career change many people begin by searching
college courses or by looking through classified ads. So what are they looking
for? Most are looking for something that “catches their interest” or a “good paying
job”.
Let’s consider for a moment the characteristics of a desirable
job. A nice salary is probably a key element in most people’s mind. Not only is the starting income important but the salary potential is very important. We need to know that there is a possibility for us to acquire wealth if we apply ourselves.
Good working conditions are important as well. However, some individuals prefer working outdoors while others would rather take a pay cut if necessary in
order to work indoors with heat and air conditioning. So that is an individual preference to some
degree.
Some of us prefer a lot of structure on the job while others would rather design
their own work day. This depends on one’s personality style. Some people are self-starters and others are not. Although this
could be marked up to individual preference, I believe most of us prefer having at least some say about what we are going to do with our
time.
I also think it’s safe to say that everyone would appreciate a boss that treats
us with respect.
While some of us prefer working during the night hours the majority of
individuals want to work during the day – Monday through Friday. Ideally, some of us would like
to split our time, working a few hours during the morning and then perhaps working a few more in late afternoon to complete our
day. Working close to home is ideal. As gas prices
continue to soar I’m sure this trend will continue.
Now let’s get back to finding this wonderful and ideal career. What if you created it? This is not a crazy
idea. Nor is it difficult. Think of something
that you are passionate about. It could be anything. Do you love: poetry, dogs, golf, cars, shoes, exercise, furniture, real estate, pottery, jewelry.………the
list is endless. Whatever it is that you are interested in you can build a business
around.
By creating a business of your own around something that you love you will have
the ideal career. Your income potential will be unlimited. You decide what the working conditions will be. For instance,
will you set up an office in a spare bedroom or will you work from your kitchen table? The choice
will be yours! You will be in control.
You will structure your work schedule and each work day. You will be your own boss. You can be as nice to yourself as
you want to be! But you can keep yourself on task as well. You will decide when you work. Are you more alert during the
evening hours? Great, that should be your new office hours. Work around your family’s busy schedule, work around appointments and shopping. You will be in control.
Commuting to and from work will never be an issue. You will simply walk down the hall to your chosen work space.
You can even work in your pajamas!
You won’t find the ideal career listed as a college major or even in the classified ads. The “ideal career” can only be found inside your head and in your heart. Put those thoughts and feelings on paper to create the ideal career for you.
