Is There An Entrepreneur
Hiding Inside You?
By Eileen Hebert
So you are tired of the office politics. You get annoyed with
the gossip and rumors. The to and from commute leaves you stressed twice a day. You’re tired of working hard to get nowhere. But does that mean
you are ready for a home-based business?
A home-based business is not for everyone. Almost everyone gets fed up with the day-to-day routines of the
work world but not everyone has what it takes to be a home entrepreneur. As a matter of fact, there
are specific characteristics required of successful home-based business owners. Let’s talk about
those.
Having a home business is not always easy – there are ups and downs and those down times can be
tough. The home business owner should have a focus, drive, determination and motivation to help pull
her through those times. In a single word, “Confidence” is necessary. The business owner will need to be positive and dedicated to a purpose – she must believe that her venture will
succeed.
It has been found that many successful entrepreneurs actually found a way to make money at an early
age. Some simply held a regular job, while others babysat neighborhood children, some sold lemonade
or delivered newspapers, and others found less traditional ways to bring in some money. The point
is, most seemed to have an “Entrepreneurial Spirit” long before adulthood. It’s apparent that
entrepreneurs know the harder they work the more likely they are to succeed.
Successful entrepreneurs have the ability to stay on top of trends and to look to the
future. This helps them to predict the future trends in their particular business or industry
enabling them to evolve services and products to meet new needs. This “Vision” enables them to
keep up with or stay ahead of competition. Vision is necessary for success.
Before beginning a home business some “Preparation” is in order.
As we said earlier, there will be ups and downs. It is important to be prepared for those down
times. A successful entrepreneur should have a savings or other income to live on or to supplement
the income until the business is thriving. Many entrepreneurs choose to start on a part-time basis
until the business reaches a particular income level.
It is imperative that anyone with a home business be “Disciplined”. Many times the concept of working for yourself is glorified leaving the impression that you can work when you
want to. Let me re-word that, you have to work even when you don't want to! And you will be the boss, no one else will be looking over your shoulder to let you know when you’re
slacking. Successful entrepreneurs are the ultimate “Self-Starters”.
There will be times when work will have to be chosen over fun activities. There will be days that your work day will have to consist of work that you may not like. There will be times that your boss (you) will ask you to come out of your comfort zone for the good of the
business. The successful entrepreneur understands this is all part of being a business
owner.
Every home business owner is required to remain “Focused”. This
includes times that friends call or visit, housework is getting behind, errands need to be run, etc.
The successful entrepreneur treats her home business as a business. If she has reserved seven hours
for her business on a given day then her business is the focus for those seven hours.
Perhaps the most important characteristic of all is that of “Courage”. Making a change takes courage. Doing something as drastic as
starting a business by one’s self can be considered risky. Many entrepreneurs face rejection on a
daily basis. There are no guarantees of steady paychecks. But if you are entrepreneur material success will be yours and the rewards are more than words can
say!
